I have two BIG questions 1) I am currently a freshman at University of Santa Cruz, California. I was told by a few people that you did not need a college degree to be a cop, but in this day and age, who knows. Anyway, I am majoring in history and I really love the coursework. But apparently some people believe that you need a criminal justice degree to become a cop. Is majoring in history going to hurt my chances of being hired? If so, how much? (I don't believe criminal justice is being offered at my school, but I don't want to transfer, because it was really difficult to get into UCSC, I think it's ranked 34th in the US, and I don't think I could switch anywhere with higher standards) 2) I have a drug history. In my senior year of highschool, I was pressured into taking extacy once, and since junior year I have consumed alcohol about 20 to 25 times. I have also smoked weed; once as a junior in highschool, and about 12 to 15 times during my break between highschool and college and the first few months of college. I have quit since. I have heard that places such as Los Angeles do not mind if you have a drug past. Will my history greatly affect my chances of being hired too? And is it ok if I still drink? (To remind you, I am in college...not being able to drink once in a while would be very saddening to my experience here lol) by the way I plan to apply when I am out of college in 2012 And to be more accurate, I tried to recall all the times I have drank or smoked, and I only remember drinking a total of 13 times and smoking a total of 11 times...but doesn't the fact that I was doing all the smoking within a small period, and I have learned since, help my case?...
